MethaNet

Ecosphere Blue's planned assessment service for blue-carbon projects, rating project performance with methane-risk projections drawn from microbial genomic evidence in mangrove sediment.

Living systemsWeather & climateWater

MethaNet is the core offering of Ecosphere Blue, a company that calls itself a molecular-surveillance and intelligence platform for carbon projects. The pitch is to assess how a blue-carbon project is performing, and to project its methane risk, from genomic and geochemical data rather than from vegetation surveys alone, so that credits can be priced against that risk.

It is built on EmergentBiome, the company's molecular evidence atlas, which it says was validated by identifying previously unaccounted-for microbial biomarkers of methane flux in mangrove sediment samples. The atlas itself links genes and genome records to sampling context and review questions, and is explicit that it is not a credit or tonnage estimate.

Pricing, licence and how the service is delivered are not stated. Status: proposed. The Ecosphere Blue page carries a "coming soon" label, and the EmergentBiome page describes its current stage as molecular diligence and measurement planning, with the internal model not yet independently reviewed and a field test as the next step.

is an instance of this concept or technique

  • Molecular atlas that links microbial genes and transcripts from wetland and coastal sediments to field measurements of methane, nitrous oxide and sulfur, as evidence for blue-carbon projects; contacts are at Ecosphere Blue, whose MethaNet product is built on it.
